After completing your nursing program, you will need to take the NCLEX to become a licensed vocational nurse in California. Like many people, you may have concerns about taking this exam. The most common reason people fail this exam is not because they lack the knowledge needed to become an LVN, but because they are nervous or poorly prepared for the exam. If you have never taken an exam like this before, you may have no clue how to prepare for it, or even when you should begin preparing for it. These study tips and tricks can help you be prepared and more relaxed when it is time for you to take the NCLEX.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute to Start Studying

You should allow yourself up to six months to prepare for the NCLEX. It is a good idea to download a copy the NCLEX’s Detailed Test Plan, which can help you get organized with your study strategy. It may help to join or start a study group with your classmates to keep you motivated. Schedule time to study and stick to it.

Study According to Your Learning Style

Do you know your personal learning style? You could be a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner or a combination of all three. Tailor your studying to how you learn best. Visual learners do best by studying pictures, flash cards and lists. Auditory learners study best by listening to lectures and discussing what they have learned with others. Kinesthetic learners learn better by practicing procedures, working with a group, and with touch models.

Hone Your Test Taking Strategy

It helps to understand a little about the NCLEX before you take it. A good strategy is to take a practice test to discover your strengths and weaknesses while getting used to taking a lengthy multiple-choice exam. You will want to be able to look at each question and determine what its essential topic is. This can save you time and direct you to what answer is needed as you go through all the questions.
