How to Set Goals that You Can Achieve
With the start of the New Year, almost everyone has the best intentions for setting new goals or resolutions for themselves. Maybe you have goals to lose weight, find a new job or go back to school. It is easy to get overwhelmed when you suddenly realize that achieving your goals is a little harder than you thought. There’s nothing wrong with admitting you may have bitten off more than you can chew.
Choosing the Right Goals for You
Choosing the right goals means trying to find the middle ground between setting the bar too high or too low. While aiming high can be very motivating, it will do you no good if you quickly lose enthusiasm because it is too far out of reach or too hard. The same applies for goals that are too easy to obtain and leave you feeling unfulfilled.
Think about the reasons for achieving the goals you want to achieve:
- Are they worth your time and investment?
- Are they too challenging or not challenging enough for you?
- Are your goals measurable?
- Do your goals have specific deadlines?
Setting a Goal to Become a Nurse
Maybe you have considered becoming a nurse. Your answers to the above questions may be:
- Yes, training to be a nurse will provide me with a stable career where I have the potential to earn enough to support my family. Therefore, it is worth my time and investment.
- Yes, I am willing to be challenged, but maybe I'm not quite ready to become a registered nurse, or maybe I want to be able to start working sooner as a licensed vocational nurse and then become an RN later.
- Yes, my goal is measurable as I progress through the nursing program and finish by taking the NCLEX exam.
- Yes, if my goal is to be an LVN, I could finish my education in as little as 10 months.
Once you have set your goals, make a commitment to make them a priority. Be accountable and share your goals with your friends and family because they can help you keep on track.
